The short version

What happens to your transcript

When you upload a PDF, it is opened and read inside your own browser tab, by code that came with this page. Nothing is transmitted anywhere while that happens, and it works with your network disconnected — which is the easiest way to check the claim for yourself.

What the planner keeps afterwards is the result of reading the file: your course codes, the terms you took them in, and their titles. That text is saved in your browser's own storage (localStorage) so your plan is still there tomorrow. It stays on that one device, in that one browser. The planner cannot read it from anywhere else, and neither can we — we never receive it.

The PDF file itself is not saved. Only its file name is kept, so the upload panel can show you which file it read.

Deleting it

Open Upload transcript and click Clear uploaded data. That removes everything read from your transcript from this browser. Clearing your browser's site data for this page does the same thing, and so does using a private window, which forgets everything when you close it.

What does leave your device

Four things, and none of them involves your transcript:

How accurate this is

Course listings, meeting times, and requirement rules are copied from Caltech's public catalog and schedule pages and refreshed periodically. They can be out of date, and the catalog itself changes. Past terms shown on the weekly grid are drawn using this year's meeting times for the same quarter, because Caltech does not publish past-year schedules — the shape of the week is right, the exact hours may not be.

Requirement progress here is an interpretation of the catalog, not a decision by anyone who can grant a degree. Before you register, drop, or count on a requirement being satisfied, confirm it with your adviser, your option representative, and the Registrar's Office. If this planner and the registrar disagree, the registrar is right.

Who runs this

This is an independent student project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the California Institute of Technology. Course descriptions and requirement text quoted from the Caltech catalog remain Caltech's.

To report a mistake in the course data, a requirement that is credited wrongly, or anything on this page, use the Feedback button in the bottom-right corner of the planner. It opens a message that goes to the project's issue tracker. There is no other contact channel, and there is nobody on call.

No warranty

The planner is provided as-is, with no warranty of any kind. It may contain mistakes, it may be unavailable, and browser storage can be lost — a browser clearing site data will take your plan with it. Use the ⤓ Backup button to keep your own copy. To the extent the law allows, the authors are not liable for any loss arising from your use of it, including a missed requirement or a registration mistake.

Changes

If these terms change, the date at the top changes with them.

You do not have to take any of this on trust. Everything described above happens in code your browser downloaded and will show you: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and upload a transcript. You will see no request carrying it — the only requests the planner makes are for its own files, for Analytics, if you press Submit on a feedback report, for that report, and, if you press Sync to Google Calendar, for Google's sign-in and its calendar service. Or disconnect from the network entirely and upload anyway: it still works.
